Definition |
C-Tests consist of four to six straightforward and authentic texts, each a complete sense unit comprising around 60 words. These texts are 'damaged' using the C-principle: |
Deleting |
Starting at the second sentence remove the second half of every second word. Replace it with a blank. After 20 or 25 blanks let the text run on to its natural conclusion. If a word has an odd number of letters, remove the larger half. Words with only one letter (English 'I' or 'a', for example) are ignored in the counting. |
Procedure |
The subjects are given the damaged texts and asked to reconstitute the original texts by writing the missing sections in the blanks. Around five minutes is allowed for each text. |
Scoring |
For scoring, one point is given for each entirely correct restoration. The points are summed up for each text, giving part scores, which are then added to give the total. |
NL Speakers |
Native speakers of the language can score C-Tests very rapidly and objectively after reading the original text only once or twice. |
