0. Developing learner autonomy in a school context

5 main differences between a teacher-directed teaching / learning environment and a teacher / learner-directed learning environment:

A shift in focus from teaching to learning.

A change in the learner's role.

  • focus on learning rather than teaching;
  • be engaged in the learner's learning process;
  • be open to learners' ideas and suggestions;
  • support learner' initiatives;
  • initiate or encourage further activities;
  • observe and analyse learning behaviour for later evaluation with learners;
  • map out working methods and ways of evaluating progress in collaboration with the learners;
  • be a consultant as well as a participant and a co-learner in the learning process.

A change in the teacher's role.

  • What am I/areyou/are we doing?
  • Why am I/are you/are we doing it?
  • What was good? Why?
  • What was bad? Why?
  • What can it be used for?

The role of evaluation.

  • things are being tried out or investigated;
  • learners are teachers and teachers a re learners;
  • process and content are mutually dependent.

A new view of the language classroom as a rich learning environment.
